You won’t succeed unless you try. It’s one of those easy to read, make you feel good kinda quotes and I’m sure you’ve heard it plenty of times before, yet many people find hard to do. What gets in the way of people succeeding? Obstacles, challenges, bumps in the road and of course their mindset.
The common misconception is that success comes easily. So when people have a desire to succeed they don’t allow for any obstacles to get in the way, often falsely assuming that the road to success is clear. So when they experience a set back, they give up believing that it’s too hard and the obstacle is too great. Moreover, they believe that if there’s an obstacle that it’s a sign that they’re not going the right way, or it’s not meant to be or that it’s due reason to give up.
Yet success in anything involves pushing through the #challenges and it requires #persistence to see it through. When we’re striving for success on a personal or professional level, what we’re really desiring is to be more competent, more skilled, more adaptable, to ultimately be better than before. Leveling up requires change. To be more ‘successful’ requires us to grow and be challenged, in order to learn these new skills, attributes and become better at it.
Say on a personal level you want to be more confident. Gaining confidence requires you to move out of your comfort zone and do things which previously you wouldn’t have done. Anything out of your comfort zone is going to be uncomfortable, because you’re developing a new skill, you’re going into unknown territory. Perhaps it will require you to put yourself out there and attend an activity where you don’t know anyone. Perhaps it’s promoting a new aspect of your business, or meeting new friends. Whatever it is, your success in gaining more confidence is going to challenge what you thought you were capable of and uncover some areas where you might need to push through your own barriers to keep trying until this new confidence is achieved.
These challenges you face on the road to success are all a necessary part of the journey. Through these challenges you are growing.
For me, my idea of success was about creating and becoming my authentic self. This meant removing and replacing a lot of limiting, false and harmful beliefs I had about myself, that were ingrained during my formative years where I experienced childhood abuse. It meant unlearning behaviours I had learned as a result or in response to the abuse I had experienced.
The pathway to my success to becoming a better person and healing the damage of abuse was filled with obstacles, detours and bumps. Absolutely no part of my pathway was easy. Why? Because, unlearning behaviours and removing limiting beliefs required me to let go of what essentially protected me when I was younger. It required me to let my guard down, to be vulnerable and learn to trust; all behaviours which were not familiar to me. It was very painful, but necessary in order for me to create the ‘success’ I desired.
Had I not understood that this was a necessary part of my journey. Had I not kept trying and persisting, it’s more than likely I would have given up. But I know it was my ability to keeping going, to keeping pushing through that got me to my ‘success’.
So whatever you want success in, be it personal, professional or both, keep trying, keep pushing through. Keep developing and persisting in the area that you find challenging and you will get there.
