I love buying new shoes. You try them on, they look pretty and make you feel amazing. You imagine yourself wearing them with your favourite jeans or dress. You literally cannot wait for an opportunity to get out and about with your new shoes on.
Though that initial excitement is replaced with dread, as we realise that they’re actually quite painful to wear. You start walking around in them and they feel quite tight, the leather’s hard and digs into your feet. The shoes haven’t yet had a chance to soften.
Yet even though they’re painful, we still wear them and put up with the excruciating pain because we know that eventually with enough wear, the leather will soften, and mould to our feet and feel comfortable. We continue to wear them, despite the pain because we’re not focused on the pain. We’re focused purely on the end result. We know that the pain is not only temporary but necessary in order for the shoes to feel comfortable . We know that to be able to enjoy these gorgeous new shoes, we have to keep putting them on and walking in them. Otherwise, we’ve just wasted a whole heap of money on shoes we’ll never wear because we’re not willing to walk with the pain.
Our personal pain, is a lot like new shoes; for us to heal, we must be willing to wear and process the pain. We must be willing to do what’s uncomfortable. Like a new pair of shoes, the more more we walk through our hurt, the less painful it becomes. If we see our pain as only temporary but necessary to get to where we want to feel, then we’d be less afraid to deal with it, because we know there is a purpose for it.
Instead of focusing on the pain, focus on the end result. Focus on how you want to feel.
Much Love
