Here's the reason I sought counselling for my childhood trauma. The reason I intentionally worked on myself for years because trauma can bog you down your whole life. Feeling like you're carrying this heavy weight around all the time.
That's just no way to live. Honestly.
I didn't want to give my life away to Trauma that was never my fault. I didn't want to perpetually suffer because of something I didn't have any say in.
At the very least I deserved to feel happy and not ever let Trauma be centre stage in my life.
Counselling was one of the ways that helped me to learn how to reframe my early traumatic experiences so that I wasn't seeing it as a dent on my value or worth. That these traumatic experiences meant I was the bad guy who didn't deserve love or protection.
Now I know that my trauma was never about me. It doesn't define me or devalue me. It is not an identity of its own that I have to hold onto.

We tend to have the propensity to measure our wort

We tend to have the propensity to measure our worth according to how we were brought up or how our parents have treated us.
That's quite normal. However what happens if our upbringing was traumatic and we didn't receive the basica of love, security and attachment from the people we look to as models.of the world?
We take this traumatic experience and we direct it inward believing if we didn't receive it, then it must mean we did not deserve it. We were not worthy of it in.the first place and we certainly have a bank of proof to prove it.
But it's not true. What's true is, that worth is not something that is earned. It is not determined by our upbringing and the experiences we had. Worth is not determined by opinions or beliefs of others.
Worth is your birthright. It is and will always be yours regardless.
A good practice is to learn to separate worth from experience.from the opinion of others.
Affirm often. I am worthy.
The hurt, the memories.will come up to remind you and try and tell you otherwise...let it come up and repeat again. I am Worthy.
You are always worthy. Always.

School was my sanctuary for so long that the thought of leaving school terrified me.
I wanted to share in the same joy my friends were experiencing but I knew the emptiness, the void I'd be feeling when I left. Knowing I didn't have a clue how I was supposed to exist in a world I wasn't ready to live in.

This is so true.
If we do not learn to face and deal with triggers they have more power to dominate and limit our lives.

It takes time but the more we practice the better we become and the less power we give to the past.

The cheapest form of counselling I ever found were in books. For more than 20 years, books were my own private coach. A way for me to learn about myself, unravel trauma & discover what the world was actually about beyond the deceitful and damaging ways childhood trauma had taught me.
Counselling was only ever one part of the recovery process. Counselling once a fortnight was not enough for me to transform and overcome. With books I had immediate access to new information, greater perspectives, insights into other lives that gave me a fuller picture of the world.
This is but a portion of the books I read and re-read to learn about myself and the world. Not only did I read these books (some of them more than 5 times) I went out into the world and practiced the strategies and skills the books discussed. (Embarrassing myself many times along the way)
Trauma recovery is layered and multidimensional and therefore one approach in my view would never work. I sought many mentors along the way as well as multiple professionals. But books were and continue to be my greatest tool for long term recovery.
