My Traumatised Brain: Science, Story & Strategies
“For the first time, someone understood how to work with my traumatised brain.”
When I was nine, I had a teacher who changed everything.
Before him, I didn’t just show up to school in survival mode — I was frozen, living in a constant state of fear. I literally could not move without my whole body shaking.
Daily abuse at home had taken over my young brain and body. Learning was not only virtually impossible, but the last thing I wanted to do. My body was just trying to survive and find some sense of safety — there was no room for focus, engagement, or connection.
But that all changed in Grade 4. Unbeknownst to my teacher, what he was doing instinctively aligned perfectly with what neuroscience now shows about trauma and the brain. Through powerful, consistent rhythmic activities, paired with genuine connection, he slowly eroded my fears and crippling anxiety.
For the first time, I was able to show up to school and feel different. My anxiety began to shift, and I could finally access the parts of my brain that allowed me to learn, relate, and engage. There was an unmistakable shift in my ability to learn — and I noticed it almost immediately. What he did changed everything.
Let me show you how to reach the learning brain — just like my teacher did for me.

My Traumatised Brain: Science, Story & Strategies is where science meets lived experience — with practical tools you can use straight away.
In this session, I share how rhythm, connection, and the brain’s natural sequence calm the stress response and create safety — the foundation for all learning.
Drawing on Dr Bruce Perry’s neuroscience and my own lived experience of childhood trauma, I show how simple, nurturing strategies regulate the lower brain, build trust, and open access to the cortex — where focus, problem-solving, and learning become possible.
You’ll learn:
🔹 How trauma impacts the developing brain and keeps students in survival mode
🔹 Why rhythm and connection regulate stress and create safety
🔹 Practical, nurturing strategies to build trust and reach the learning brain
